Why We Chase Hidden American Stories

Most of America’s history isn’t confined to museums. It resides in small towns that remain largely unknown unless someone pauses to ask a question.

Defining “hidden”

We’re not referring to clandestine conspiracies or concealed treasures. We’re talking about the ordinary kind of hidden—a local legend that everyone knows but no one has documented properly, a grave with a captivating story that only locals share, or a building that has undergone significant transformations over time. Hidden simply means overlooked, not shrouded in mystery.

Why small towns specifically

While big cities boast well-documented histories that are debated and transformed into tourist attractions, small towns often lack such comprehensive records. For instance, a courthouse square that has stood for over a century might have only one plaque detailing its history, while the actual story is ten times more intriguing than what the plaque conveys. This gap between what’s physically present and what’s actually recounted is where we spend most of our time.

The importance of accuracy

A legend and a documented fact are distinct entities, and we strive to be transparent about which one we’re presenting. When a story is disputed, such as a grave with a contested identity or an unresolved historical figure’s fate, we acknowledge the dispute. We’re not interested in simplifying every narrative into a confident, tidy account if the truth is inherently complex and more captivating than that.

The connection to our other creations

Our jewelry carries coordinates of significant locations, our antiques hold authentic historical artifacts from genuine homes, and our writing delves into stories that a brief video cannot fully encompass. All of these endeavors stem from the same instinct—that every place, regardless of its size or obscurity, deserves to have its story authentically told, not merely overlooked.

What we hope you take away

You don’t need to reside in any of the towns we visit to gain something from this. The overarching message is that wherever you’re from, there’s likely a story like this near you—something overlooked and deserving of closer scrutiny. We hope that by witnessing our journey in discovering these stories, you’ll become a bit more curious about the ones that reside near your own doorstep.
